How Summer Weather May Have Affected Your Garage Door
We all love summer for its days off of school, warm sunshine, later sunsets, vacations and fun activities in the sun. But your garage door can be impacted by many elements of summer that you should be aware of and watch out for. Our list can help you keep an eye on your garage door as the summer season rolls on.
- Sun’s effect on your sensors: Part of your garage door’s safety features are sensors that are built in to prompt your door to stop if something falls into its path. These photo-eyes can “see” if there is an obstruction while closing and it will spur your door to reverse directions. Bright sun rays may prompt your door to react even though there is not anything in the way. Extreme or high heat can also take a toll on your garage door opener’s electronic components as they can be sensitive.
- Moisture in the air: The hot, humid days and nights of summer can cause a sticky situation for your garage door and prevent it from rolling smoothly along the rails. You should keep lubricant on hand to carefully create a more slippery surface if needed. Always keep an eye on your garage door’s moving parts that can be affected by humid weather and high temperatures.
- Summer storms: Thunderstorms can wreak havoc on your home’s electricity flow. If your power goes out during a storm, your garage door opener will not function. You and your family members should be knowledgeable on how to manually operate your garage door from the inside and outside if you need to access your home during a power outage. After the storm has passed, take a close look at your garage door for any damage, such as dents or dings in your panels.
- Over time: While it may not be obvious right away, your garage door’s color could fade as the sun beats down summer after summer. A fresh new garage door can upgrade your curb appeal with a new style. You can upgrade your old door’s look by giving it a good scrubbing. Use a sponge or soft bristle brush and liquid dish detergent to wipe away any built-up dirt and grime. If you have a wood door, have a regularly scheduled upgrade with a new coat of paint or stain.
