Keep Critters Out of Your Garage This Winter

Keep Critters Out of Your Garage This Winter

As the temperatures begin to drop and the days become shorter, we start spending more time indoors – including our neighborhood wildlife. Unfortunately, your garage acts as the perfect place for mice, raccoons, and other critters to camp out during the chilly autumn and winter months, but that doesn’t mean we want them there. Today, to help prepare you for the long winter months ahead, the team at Affordable Garage Door, Inc. is sharing a few tips to keep wildlife out of your garage.

Remove and Fortify Enticing Items

With much of the greenery beginning to die back, wildlife is starting to look for alternative food sources. If you keep birdseed or other edible items in your garage, critters will be more drawn to your space than if these items weren’t there. Storing food in airtight containers or elsewhere in your home is a great way to deter hungry wildlife.

In addition to food sources, wildlife is also looking for warm places to live that are out of the elements. Items such as blankets, boxes, and other small spaces animals can burrow in are also an open invitation for wildlife to make a home in your garage. Keeping these items stored away and tightly sealed can prevent critters from staying long-term.

Declutter and Clean

Garages often act as a storage space, resulting in a pile up of items in your space. To prevent creating a comfortable area for wildlife to live in your garage during the winter, it’s good practice to clean your garage before winter hits and at the beginning of spring. Empty and repack storage boxes, sweep your garage to clean up dirt, dust, and other debris, and wipe down items such as grills, took boxes, and lawnmowers.

Set Traps

If you notice that critters have already started to make a home in your garage, setting traps can help you catch them. Keeping traps set in your garage year-round can also ensure any wildlife that does happen to slip in will be taken care of before they can cause issues.

Check Your Garage Door

Wildlife is clever when finding ways to get into your garage. All they need is a small hole in your foundation or siding or a crack between your garage door and the ground to slip in. Inspect your garage door to ensure it is closing properly and is in good condition. If you notice any issues or damage, immediately call an experienced garage door company such as Affordable Garage Door, Inc. Our garage door professionals can inspect your door, diagnose any issues, and provide you with the best options to fix your door.
