Spring Cleaning and Garage Door Maintenance To-Dos

Spring is nearly here! As the days get longer and the weather warms, now’s the time to get your home in order with some spring cleaning so that you can enjoy the great outdoors when sunshine becomes a constant. As you organize your shelves and clean out your pantry, dust and clean your baseboards, and perform the myriad of other home spring cleanings musts, here are some garage door cleaning and maintenance to-dos to remember:

Give Your Garage Door a Good Scrub

Your garage door has taken a lot of wear and tear over the winter, ranging from harsh winds and hail to snow, ice, and moisture damage. As a result, chances are that your garage door is looking pretty beaten up right about now, and could likely benefit from a thorough cleaning.

To wash your garage door, use a mild chemical-free soap or other cleaner; do not use harsh or abrasive detergents, which could damage paint and other materials. Clean both the outside and inside of your garage door, as well as any garage door windows.

Perform Garage Door Maintenance

Spring is a great time to perform maintenance on your garage door (maintenance should be performed on a routine basis, but can be difficult to do during the wintertime due to temperature and moisture issues). Some garage door maintenance musts include:

  • Do a visual inspection of your garage door – Does anything look out of the ordinary? Check for broken springs, dents or cracks in the garage door, and frayed garage door cables.
  • Do a sound check – Open and close your garage door. Do you hear any banging, screeching or other out-of-the-ordinary sounds?
  • Tighten and lubricate – Once you’ve ruled out any major problems, you can proceed with tightening any nuts and bolts, and lubricating all moving parts.
  • Test the garage door automatic reversal function – Finally, you should check the automatic reversal function using a broom or piece of plywood. To do this, close your garage door and wave the item in front of the automatic reversal sensor. If nothing happens, the sensor is broken, and your garage door is dangerous. You need to repair this immediately.
