How to Store Your Summer Gadgets Safely in Your Garage

One of the best things about summer is that good weather is a sign that it’s time to break out the summer ‘toys.’ From your grill to your fancy lawnmower to your mountain bikes and boat, your garage has a big responsibility to store some of your favorite items. Here are some tips for making sure that those items are stored safely:

Prepare Items For Garage Storage

Wouldn’t be awesome to use your summer toys and equipment and then throw them in the garage without having to worry about deterioration or accidents? We think so, too. However, if you take a few extra minutes to prepare your items for being stored in the garage – even if it is just going to be a couple of days before you use them again – you won’t regret it.

• Wipe down everything. If things are wet (like a boat) or covered in grease (like a grill), wipe them down before you call it a night. Moisture, grease, and debris can cause your toys to rust and deteriorate faster than they would otherwise. Plus, you don’t want grease dripping onto your garage floor!

• Make sure gas is safely stored. If you are going to store a gas grill inside or in your garage rather than outdoors on your patio, you must turn the valve to the OFF position, disconnect the cylinder, remove the cylinder, and then leave the LP cylinder outdoors. Make sure you store it upright and in an area where it won’t get too hot.

• Make sure items are properly secured or/and stabilized. The worst thing that could happen is heavy items that are not properly stabilized falling on you, a pet, or a child and causing an injury. Regardless of what you are storing, make sure that it is not going to be falling over anytime soon. If using ceiling hooks, make sure they are properly installed and stable.

In addition to making sure that items are stored in a manner that they won’t pose a health or injury hazard to you or any of your loved ones, and so they’ll remain in good condition as long as possible, make sure your garage is secured, too – you do not want to lose any of your favorite toys to the work of a thief! Not only should you make sure any doors to your garage from outside are equipped with deadbolts, but you should also consider reinforcing the security of your garage door; older garage doors with rust or decay are easier to break into. Garage door repair may very well be in order.
