Easy Ways to Improve Your Garage Door

Improving your garage door doesn’t have to cost you a fortune, yet it is one of the easiest and fastest ways that you can improve your home’s curb appeal, save money on energy costs, change the style of your home, and even enhance your home’s security. If you’re in the market to get the most bang for your buck in regards to home improvement projects, here are a few easy ways to improve your garage door:

  1. Give it a New Coat of Paint

A new coat of paint does more than just give your home a pop of color or transform a garage door from looking like it’s on its last leg to look brand new. Rather, a new coat of paint can provide protection from harsh UV rays, and can also be used to protect against weather and moisture. If you do decide to paint, be sure to choose a high quality paint that is durable.

  1. Get a New Garage Door Opener

How cool would it be to convert your garage into a smart garage, that you have the power to open and close from your smartphone? In addition to smart garage door devices, the latest and greatest in garage door openers perform better than those of the past, use less energy, and offer more security features.

  1. Improve Your Energy Efficiency

No matter where you live in Indiana, doing your part to go great and save energy where you can is essential for the greater good, and it also help you to save on energy costs, too. Energy efficient garage doors are becoming increasingly popular, as with better insulation, these doors can help to keep a garage warm during the wintertime and cool during the summer. Not ready to replace your entire garage door yet? No problem – even just replacing your weatherstripping is a valuable step to take.

  1. Replace Your Garage Door

This home improvement project is a big one, but it could be well worth it if your garage door is in bad condition, characterized by loud noises when opening and closing, cracks and damage to the garage door surfaces, and warping of the garage door. Replacing your garage door–and while you are at it, changing your garage door’s/home’s style–can be a fun a rewarding project. Replacing your garage door has the potential to improve the value of your home, too.

  1. Add Security Lights

Finally, one more garage door improvement that is relatively inexpensive to invest in is the addition of security lights. Automatic, motion-sensor garage door security lights not only offer an aesthetic appeal, but they can help you and your guests navigate your property in the dark. Of course, security lights also help by deterring intruders from entering.

Most Common Garage Door Problems

When it comes to garage door problems, we have seen and fixed it all. Some of the most common garage door problems that our professionals see include:

  • Misaligned photo eyes. You probably know that when something is in the path of your garage door, it won’t close, but instead reverses in order to prevent an accident or damage. If your garage door keeps going down only to reopen before it closes completely, and you can’t see anything in the way of the garage door’s path, the problem may be misaligned photo eyes. Photo eyes are sensors that register whether or not anything is blocking the garage door from closing, but over time they can become very dirty (making detecting objects very difficult) and misaligned. We can clean and realign photo eyes to get things on the move again.
  • Defective transmitters. Your automatic garage door opener works by transmitting a signal to your garage door. If something is defective with the transmitter, the signal won’t go through, and you won’t be able to open your garage door. If your door is difficult to open even when you are standing right in front of it, a defective transmitter may be to blame.
  • Broken springs. Springs are responsible for moving the garage door up and down. If you hear a loud crash and the garage door won’t open, broken springs may be the problem. You should never try to repair broken springs on your own, as doing so has the potential to be very dangerous. Instead, let our experienced professionals help you diagnose and correct broken springs.

How to Handle Common Garage Door Problems

The above problems are just some of the most common ones we see. Misaligned tracks, dead transmitter batteries, sticky doors, and rusted moving parts are also common. No matter how big or how small the garage door issue, our service professionals hope that you will call us for garage door repairs. We always provide you with a free quote before we start a job, and guarantee superior work. It’s that Time of Year! Garage Spring Cleaning

It’s that time of year again! As the flowers start to bloom, birds begin to chirp, and baby animals are born throughout Lowell and surrounding areas of Indiana, thinking about spring cleaning is a must. While your home and yard are surely priorities, don’t neglect the garage and garage door.

Spring Cleaning Musts for Your Garage

Before temperatures get too hot and being in your garage is a nightmare, be sure to handle these garage spring cleaning musts:

  • Get organized. Once a year, you should go through your garage and commit to throwing out the things that you no longer use or need and are in poor condition, donating the things that you don’t need that are in good condition, and organizing the items that you’re choosing to keep. Go with locked cabinets for any dangerous chemicals to protect children and pets, and make sure that sharp or dangerous objects are out of reach. Use bins with labels to store all other small items.
  • Rethink your space. What do you use your garage for? What would you like to use your garage for? Many people think of the garage as simply place to store their tools, junk, and vehicle. However, the garage has the potential to be more than that, ranging from an office space to an art studio to a home gym. If you have been wanting to convert your garage for awhile, now may be the time.
  • Give it a good scrub. Sweep and mop floors, wipe down shelves, and clean windows. Garages are some of the grungiest places that there are – commit a few hours to getting things sparkling.

Don’t Forget the Garage Door!

As you embark in garage spring cleaning, don’t forget about your garage door! The garage door is a critical part of your garage and your home’s security, and deserves a little TLC. You should:

  • Perform basic maintenance, such as checking springs and oiling moving parts;
  • Assess your garage door for any damage, such as dents or mold;
  • Replace weatherstripping; and
  • Give your garage door a good clean – a power washer can be a great tool depending upon your garage door material (some pressure washers can be too powerful).

It may also be time to consider investing in repair, or even replacing your garage door entirely. While routine garage door maintenance can help a garage stay in great shape for years, garage doors that are older than one to two decades may be on their way out.

How Easy Is It to Break in Through a Garage Door?

A garage is used to store a number of valuable items, from expensive power tools and yard equipment to your automobile and sports gear. What’s more, many garages in Lowell and surrounding areas are attached, meaning that a garage doesn’t just store the items within it; it also provides access to your home.

Securing your garage – and your home – is integral to your safety. Did you know that when your garage door is in poor form, though, it can be easier to break into?

Identifying Vulnerabilities in Your Garage Door

Garage doors that are damaged, have weakened areas (very common in wooden doors that have started to decay as a result of age and weather), or that are made from cheap materials are easier to break into than are strong, new, and well-maintained doors. In fact, doors that are old and deteriorating may be accessed very easily with few tools.

If your garage door is more than a decade old, or if it has been damaged by weather or another accident, such as backing up your vehicle into the garage, you should check it for any areas of weakness. Signs of weakness that could make your garage vulnerable to a break in include dents, cracks, rotting, and mold damage.

How to Improve Your Garage Door Security

Luckily, there are a few easy things that you can do to improve your garage door security:

  • Maintain your garage door. Garage doors need regular maintenance in order to perform ideally, and keep your family safe. If your door is broken or damaged, a thief may have easy access to your garage and your home.
  • Consider upgrading to a more secure garage door. Sturdier materials, such as steel, are much more resistant to break ins. If your garage is made of a cheap material or wood, you may want to consider upgrading to a more secure garage door type.
  • Keep your automatic garage door opener on you. One easy way that criminals access garages is by simply using the automatic opener. These can be easy to snatch, especially if your garage door opener is kept in plain view in your vehicle.
  • Install sensor lights. Installing motion sensor lights in the area surrounding your garage is a great way to deter criminals and protect your home.

Summer Storms: What to Do When the Garage Door Won’t Open

A summer storm can be a fun thing to observe and listen to, and the rain is great for the earth. But when storms get serious, they may knock the power out or even cause damage to a garage door. Here is what to do when you go to open the garage door and nothing happens, and who to call if you need garage door repairs.

Troubleshoot the Problem

The first thing that you should do is to troubleshoot the reason behind why the garage door isn’t budging. If there was a storm and the power went out, there is a good chance that the problem (assuming the power is back on) lies in a disruption in the circuit breaker. If this isn’t the case and power supply has nothing to do with your garage door’s lack of opening, check to see if the sensor is blocked (if you are having trouble closing the door), make sure the torsion spring isn’t broken, and consider whether or not the problem could lie in the remote control.

Take Action

Once you have diagnosed the problem, the next step is taking action. If the problem lies in a spring, be careful. Replacing garage door torsion springs is a job that is often best left to the professionals.

If the problem lies in something blocking the sensor, remove the item; if the problem lies in the remote control, try replacing the batteries.

If the power is still out and you need to get your garage door open to leave the house, you will need to do so manually. You can open a garage door manually by pulling on the emergency cord to disconnect the door from the opener. Then, lift the door straight up until it is fully open – if you do not open it all the way, there is a risk that the garage will come crashing back down.
