New Year’s Resolutions for Your Garage – Prepping Your Garage for the New Year

With January upon us, the time is now to set a resolution for your garage door for the New Year. If your garage could talk, it would probably chat your ear off about its desire for more organization, better insulation, and a more secure and safer garage door. To help you achieve your garage New Year’s Resolutions in 2016, the professionals at Affordable Garage Door, Inc. are ready to meet with you. Serving St. John, Indiana and surrounding areas, we want to help you get your garage door in tip-top shape today!

Organize and Maximize Space

If your garage is about as chaotic as a space could be, resolve to get it organized before the month of January comes to a close. When you throw out things that you no longer need and organize the things that you do, you will maximize space and have way more room than you ever thought possible. You can use this extra room as an area to keep exercise equipment, as a place to store your brand new mower or grill that you got for Christmas, or even consider a garage office or second bedroom.

Insulate Your Garage and Garage Door

Insulation of a garage and garage door is key, especially if your garage is a place where you spend a lot of time and that you pay to keep heated. The sooner that you take the steps to insulate a garage door, the earlier that you can begin saving money and staying comfortable. If you are not sure how well insulated your garage door currently is, call a professional for a home visit where your garage door can be assessed.

Improve Your Garage Door’s Safety and Security

When was the last time you performed maintenance or repairs on your garage door? If you can’t remember, chances are it has been far too long. When you do not perform routine maintenance on a garage door, both its safety and its security are jeopardized. You can improve both by checking your garage door’s automatic reversal system, testing the batteries in your garage door remotes, assessing your garage door for any damage, and lubricating your garage door’s moving parts. If you notice that anything is not working property or needs repairs, call a garage door professional in St. John immediately.

What To Do If Your Garage Door Freezes This Winter

Dealing with a frozen garage door is not the best way to start the day, especially when your alarm didn’t go off and you are already running late for work. Unfortunately, frozen garage doors are a reality for many living in Cedar Lake, Indiana, where temperatures routinely drop well below freezing in the winter months. If your door freezes, here is what you need to do:

Pull Your Emergency Release Cord for Manual Opening

If your garage door will not open automatically when you push on your garage door opener, then pull the red emergency release cord that is (typically) located in the center of your garage door. Do not continually try to open the garage door automatically, as doing so will burn out the battery and even strip the garage door’s gears.

Once you have pulled the emergency release cord, try manually opening the garage door – sometimes, your own force is enough to lift it when frozen. If your leverage is not enough, then it’s time to remove ice manually.

Remove Ice Manually

If you cannot break the ice seal on your garage door by pulling upon the garage, then you may have to remove ice manually from the garage door’s bottom where it meets the ground. Use an ice scraper to break up ice surrounding the door. However, be careful to not damage your door when doing this. If you have a heat gun, you can use this to slowly melt the ice surrounding the garage door. If you have outdoor electrical outlets, you can also accomplish this using a hairdryer.

How to Prevent a Garage Door From Freezing

The best way to remedy a frozen garage door is to prevent it from freezing in the first place. Basic garage door repair and maintenance can be essential before cold weather hits. Best practices for preventing a garage door from freezing include:

  • Replacing the weather stripping;
  • Removing snow and ice as it accumulates;
  • Making sure your garage door is properly insulated to maintain a comfortable garage temperature; and
  • Using a lubricant with waterproof properties.

Choosing the Best Material for Your New Garage Door

If you’re a new homeowner in Lake County, Indiana or need to replace your existing garage door, you have a big decision to make – with multiple different garage door materials to choose from, knowing which is best isn’t always straightforward. At Affordable Garage Door, we can help you choose the best garage door material for your location, your budget, and your home’s style.

Wood

The best thing about a wooden garage door is the beauty and craftsmanship that it offers; wood garage doors are both functional and aesthetic in nature. Wood garage doors can be crafted from cedar, redwood, fir, and more depending upon preference and style.

In addition to looks, another benefit of a wood garage door is that it offers more insulation than some other garage door material types, including most steel garage doors. However, wood garage doors can be hard to maintain. Especially in areas like Cedar Lake, Lowell, and Highland where temperatures can get hot and humidity levels high, wood garage doors may require frequent maintenance.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass doors are less common than are wooden garage doors and other garage door materials, and offer poor insulation as well. However, fiberglass does offer protection from water erosion, making it a wise choice for those who are near water. Fiberglass is also slightly more resistant to dents than aluminum.

Aluminum

The biggest advantage to choosing an aluminum garage door is its cost, as aluminum garage doors are typically the least expensive material option. Aluminum garage doors are also much lighter than other garage door materials, placing less strain on garage door springs. Aluminum is also rust-resistant. Disadvantages to aluminum garage doors include poor insulation and easy denting, the latter of which can be tough to repair. Click here to learn more about garage door repairs.

Steel

Steel is the most popular garage door material, and for good reason. Not only is steel very durable and strong, but insulated garage doors can also be purchased, helping to reduce energy waste and reduce noise. Steel is also available in a number of different styles and can be painted in nearly any color. Steel garage doors are also more resistant to impact, and are unlikely to dent in wind storms, minor fender benders, or if hit with toys or other objects.

Top Signs You Need a New Garage Door

Garage doors sit there every day, usually at the front of our houses, mostly doing nothing. Most of the time we pay no attention to them, even though we might look right at them every time we come or go from our homes. That can all change when our garage door suddenly decides to stop working. When a good garage door goes bad, we might have the tendency to lose our cool and get a little upset. Perhaps your garage door has an unsightly dent or two from your foot. Relax; there is a better solution.

We Make Service Calls

How to Choose the Correct Garage Door Opener

Have you recently purchased a new garage door? Maybe you need to replace an older door. If so, then now is a good time consider adding a new garage door opener as well. On the other hand, maybe your garage door is just fine, but you still don’t have an automatic opener installed. If that’s the case, then it’s definitely time to think about a new garage door opener for your home in St John or Merrillville. A garage door opener can make a world of difference in your life because it can add a lot of convenience. There’s not good reason to still be opening your garage door manually.

The Many Styles of Garage Door Openers

Just as there are hundreds of different styles and designs of garage doors, there are also many different kinds of garage door openers. While they all essentially perform the same function, they aren’t all the same. They are many makes and models of garage door openers, but at Affordable Garage Door, Inc., we offer the complete line of both commercial and residential LiftMaster garage door openers. However, there are still many options to choose from within the LiftMaster brand. So how do you know which garage door opener is right for you?

Important Factors to Consider

First off, you need to know that garage door openers have three different and unique types: Chain drive, Belt Drive and Screw Drive. They all have different benefits, so you need to determine which one best fits your needs.  Belt drive openers are very quiet and are a good fit for garage doors that are close to your living space. Garage door openers with a chain drive are probably the most common because they work for just about any type of garage door. They can lift even the heaviest garage doors, but are not as quiet as belt drive openers. If you have a one-piece door that tilts, then a screw drive is a good choice. They are also quieter than a chain drive opener and they are very durable.
