If your garage door isn’t working, you may be looking for a quick solution. This is especially true if there is an item kept in your garage door that you need access to (like your vehicle), but are prevented from using because your garage door won’t open, or will open but then won’t close.
If you’re like most people and would love to get your garage door repaired in as little time as possible, you might consider trying to troubleshoot the problem on your own first. We never recommend undertaking big repair projects–such as replacing broken springs–but figuring out what’s wrong on your own and fixing minor problems can save you time and money in some cases. Here are some tips for troubleshooting your garage door:
The first step in diagnosing a garage door problem is to check the garage door to rule out whether or not tracks and rollers are the problem. To do this, pull the cord on your garage door to manually lower it, and then open it again. If it opens and closes without issue, the the problem is not with your garage door tracks, springs, or rollers; the problem is most likely with the garage door opener.
If the garage door does not open and close smoothly, then the problem is with the rollers, tracks, or springs.
If your door makes it almost all the way down but then reverses course before closing, the problem is likely something to do with your garage door automatic reversal sensor. Open the garage door, wipe the sensor and ensure that it’s properly aligned. Move anything that may be in the garage door’s or sensor’s path. Then, try closing it again.
Assuming that you deduce that everything is OK with the moving parts of your garage door doing the easy test above, the problem may be as simple as replacing the batteries in your garage door remote. In some cases, the problem may be more complicated, and replacing the wall switch wires may be necessary.
If removing any obstacles that are in front of your garage door and replacing your garage door remote batteries doesn’t do the trick, the next step is to call a professional. At Affordable Garage Door, Inc., we will perform a thorough assessment of your garage door to diagnose the problem, and perform repairs fast and at a price you can feel good about.
