There’s a lot to look forward to as February turns into March, including the potential for new blossoms on trees, flowers popping up in the garden, baby animals, and of course, longer days and more sunshine. Indeed, spring is many people’s favorite time of year, and for good reason.
For homeowners, spring can be a double-edged sword. While there is certainly more to look forward to, spring can also mean tuning into a home’s needs, particularly parts of the home that are affected by things like temperatures and moisture.
For garage door owners in Illinois and Indiana, here’s a look into what warming temperatures can mean for your garage door.
March can be a month with a lot of humidity and a lot of moisture, often in the form of rain or snow. For garage doors, this can be problematic. Humidity can lead to a host of issues, including issues with moving parts, expansion, and even damage to the garage door itself (especially if the door is made of wood).
Moisture can also seep into a garage and cause issues in the event that the garage door isn’t properly weatherstripped. We highly recommend checking your weather stripping at the end of winter and replacing it if need be.
While March means more sun and longer days, remember that a garage door that is in direct sunlight for the greater part of the day can suffer damage as a result of sun damage and heat damage. Not only may your garage door be damaged and experience problems like color fade, but the inside of your garage may get very hot as well, which can be a problem if you keep temperature-sensitive items within your garage, or use your garage as an extra living area of your home. Some things that you can do to beat the heat are to consider installing an insulated garage door (or insulating an existing door) which will help to regulate temperatures, paint your garage door a lighter color, and add ventilation fans throughout your garage. You can also insulate the walls of your garage.
As temperatures warm up, now’s the perfect time to assess your garage door and perform maintenance where needed. Not only do you have the excuse of the cold to prevent you from performing maintenance, but over the winter, damage and wear and tear is possible, so spring is a necessary time to make sure everything is in working order.
