There are few things more annoying than pulling into your garage after a long day, pressing the button to close it, and watching your garage door stop halfway and reverse. This isn’t just frustrating; it’s a security risk. A perpetually open garage leaves your home vulnerable to weather, pests, and intruders.

At Affordable Garage Door Inc., we understand this frustration better than anyone. We have spent over 30 years serving Northwest Indiana, and in that time, we have seen an abundance of reasons why a door might fail. While some issues require a professional touch, others are simple fixes you can spot yourself. Here’s a look at why your door might be stuck and what you should look for.

What Can Keep a Garage Door From Closing?

Before you panic about expensive repairs, check for the most obvious culprit: a physical obstruction. Modern garage doors are equipped with safety features designed to protect your family and your car. If the door senses resistance or hits an object, it will automatically reverse.

Check the threshold where the door meets the ground. Has a broom fallen over? Is there a garden hose, a toy, or even a buildup of ice and snow blocking the path? Sometimes, debris is not immediately visible from the driver’s seat. Clear the area completely and try the button again. If the door closes, your safety reversal system was just doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

How Do I Know If My Sensors Are Misaligned or Damaged?

If the floor is clear but the door still reverses immediately after you try to close it, your photo-eye sensors may be to blame. These are the two small devices located near the bottom of the door tracks, usually about six inches off the ground. They shoot an invisible beam across the opening. If that beam is broken, the door will not close.

Over time, these sensors can get knocked out of alignment. Perhaps a bike tire bumped one, or a stray trash can nudged it. Even a layer of dust or a spiderweb over the lens can block the signal.

Check the LED lights on the sensors. If one is blinking or off entirely, they are likely misaligned. You can often fix this by gently adjusting the sensor by hand until the sensor light becomes solid again. Give the lens a quick wipe with a soft cloth to remove any dirt. If the lights are solid and the door still refuses to close, the wiring may be damaged, which requires a professional inspection.

Can Issues With Garage Door Tracks Prevent the Door From Closing?

Your garage door runs on metal tracks that guide the rollers up and down. If these tracks are damaged, the door will physically stick. Stand inside your garage (with the door closed or partially open) and visually inspect the metal tracks on both sides.

Look for bends, warps, or gaps. If the tracks have any of these, the rollers will hit a roadblock and the opener will stop to prevent the motor from burning out. You should also look for built-up grease or grime inside the tracks that might be acting like glue.

While you can wipe out dirty tracks, do not attempt to hammer out bent tracks yourself. You risk making the damage worse or causing the door to fall off the track entirely.

What Other Components Can Keep Doors From Closing?

If the path is clear, the sensors are aligned, and the tracks look straight, the issue likely lies with the hardware that lifts the door. Garage doors rely on high-tension springs and cables to lift their weight.

Broken Springs: Your springs do the heavy lifting. If a spring is broken, the opener will struggle to lift the dead weight of the door and will likely stop functioning as a safety precaution.

Snapped Cables: The cables work in tandem with the springs. If a cable snaps or becomes loose, the door may close unevenly or jam in the tracks.

Do not attempt to repair springs or cables yourself, as these components are under extreme tension and can cause severe injury if handled incorrectly. Our team at Affordable Garage Door Inc. specializes in these kinds of repairs. We carry high-quality parts to get your door running safely in no time.
